Investigating Leads

This stage of the investigation process naturally and logically comes next, this is because the leads which will be investigated will either have come from the evidence found in in either the preliminary or follow up investigations or these leads will have come from public information given at the incident room. This stage involves processes such as house-to-house enquiries, forensic testing on evidence and pathology results on any deceased victims. This investigating leads stage is a very important stage as it is when suspects to the crime may begin to emerge, and also when information can be gained about exactly what happened regarding the crime.

At this point In the OJ Simpson case leads began to be investigated, these leads came from evidence recovered at the crime scenes and witness statements amongst other factors. For example the fact that the police had recovered one left handed glove at Nicole Brown’s house and a right hand glove which seemed to match at OJ Simpson’s house lead them to begin looking at Simpson as a suspect. Also another lead indicating that OJ Simpson may be involved began to be investigated after considering witness statements such as that of the limo driver who had taken Simpson to the airport on the night of the murders. The limo driver told the police that he had been waiting outside Simpson’s house since 10.25 and had received no answer from the house when he had tried to buzz the gate to let him drive up the driveway nor when he rang the house. Allan Park – the limo driver however said that at 10.50 he saw a man fitting the description of OJ Simpson hurrying across the drive and up to the house. Minutes later Simpson answered the gate phone and opened the gate to let the limo into the drive. This again gave the police another lead pointing to Simpson being a suspect. Another lead in the case pointing the police to believing that OJ Simpson was a prime suspect came from preliminary DNA testing on the glove found at Simpson’s house. The DNA test came back indicating that there were trace of both Ronald Goldman’s and Nicole Brown’s DNA present on the glove. This needed to be tested further however it gave police a lead to investigate.
