Process of Elimination

The next stage in the investigation process is the process of elimination. This stage involves, depending on the evidence and witness statements, eliminating certain suspects or certain lines of inquiry. This stage logically has to be where it is placed in the investigation process, this is because in order for suspects or lines of inquiry to be eliminated all of the other investigation and intelligence gathering stages of the process have to have been carried out. This stage is also very important as certain suspects and inquiries have to be eliminated from the investigation – especially if there are many suspects or lines of inquiry. This is in order for the police to be able to narrow down the suspects and eventually find the perpetrator of the crime.

In the OJ Simpson case, all the witness statements which had been collected and the evidence which had been recovered and processed pointed towards OJ Simpson being the perpetrator of the murders of Nicole Brown and Ronald Goldman. This is because different witnesses were able to place him in the area, or like the limo driver were able to place him only returning home at the time after the murder were committed. Also there was a lot of DNA evidence which gave evidence that OJ was guilty, this included the DNA of each of the victims being on the glove found at his house as well as inside his Ford Bronco. Also OJ Simpson’s blood was found at the murder scene and he had a deep cut on his finger that when explaining how it happened to the police, contradicted himself many times. Therefore other possible lines of enquiry were eliminated and the police proceeded with charging OJ Simpson with the murders of Nicole Brown and Ronald Goldman. This case was then taken to court.
