The Investigation Plan

The next stage of the investigation process which occurs when a crime has been committed is the investigation plan. This stage logically has to come after the preliminary investigation as after initial evidence has been discovered during the preliminary investigation a plan has to be made on how to proceed with the investigation. The investigation plan is an important stage of the investigation process as it ensures that the investigation which takes place into the crime is organised and controlled.

In the OJ Simpson case this stage overlapped with the previous stage. This is because detectives, after discovering that the body was most likely that of Nicole Brown – OJ Simpsons ex-wife, began to plan the investigation. Detectives Phillips, Fuhrman, Lange and Vannatter were informed by a senior detective that OJ Simpson needed to be notified as his children were being kept at the local police station and also because he was connected to Brown, he had to be examined as a “potential suspect”. At this news the detectives began to discuss and plan how they would proceed with the investigation. The detectives decided that – knowing where OJ Simpson lived would go directly to his home to break the news to him. The Detectives also at this stage planned that the families of the two victims would need to be notified before the story broke in the media.
